LOWER HUTT TENNIS CLUB CROSS COURT August/September 2001

......FROM THE EDITOR

The current financial budget for the 2001/2002 season shows a loss which will only be resolved by either cutting expenditure, obtaining sponsors, increasing the level of subscriptions or getting additional members.

We are without a Club Captain & so there will also be either a lot of work for the same few dedicated club members or you will all miss out on some of our usual tennis activities because they will just not happen.

So if you see in this newsletter a request for assistance please give it some serious consideration. We have one of the best clubs in the Wellington Hutt Valley region. Lets not spoil this record with a lack of volunteers to keep it like that.

CLUB CAPTAINS CORNER

Is there a volunteer out there prepared to take on this position. We were fortunate to have Mick Bolland last season who had some great ideas to excite us at club events. No experience is required - just a love of tennis..

NEW MEMBERS

Now is the time to suggest to your friends or colleagues its time they joined a great tennis club.
If you know other players suggest they visit
The Club at League times to see for themselves how we enjoy ourselves. Alternately they can telephone one of the Committee for more information

CLERK OF WORKS

The fences must be fixed
The weeds need spray control
Rubbish always needs to be taken away
The nets always need adjusting.

Do we have any volunteers?

JUNIORS

We have had a group of 25 juniors on Friday nights playing right through the winter.
Gene has kept them busy and they have enjoyed some great nights. This has been a successful first for the Club & we must repeat it again next year.

Registration days will be held at The Club
for all juniors from 5 years & upwards

Saturday 1 September 9 am - 11 am
Wednesday 5 September 7 pm - 9 pm
Sunday 9 September 9 am - 11 am

Saturday 1 September will be a fun day & we hope to have demonstration racquets
& other games etc

Make sure you register on one of these days as play will commence as follows:-

Beginners - Sunday 9 September at 9 am
Juniors - Sunday 9 September at 9 am
Adv. Juniors - 5 pm on Friday 7 September

Interclub team entries must be made immediately so do not delay with your entry
We will run trials for Junior Interclub plus ladder matches at 9 am on Saturday 8 September & Saturday 15 September . You will need to come both days.
Parents we need your help with the running of these mornings. We need 4 parents to help put the kids on & off the courts to keep it smooth.
We will arrange a coaching session for parents to put them through a short training session so they will know what is expected of them on Sunday mornings. This is a lot of fun even if you have never played tennis before and will enable you to help your own children at other times.
Please let your school friends know so they can come along & register as well.

Junior Special
Summer is racing up quickly and will be here before we know it!

This season I am part of the junior committee out to make the junior side of the Club bigger & better for all junior members.
This season I am once again running the Friday night sessions & I am taking on the Sunday morning club coaching. We have some great ideas about getting it running smoothly & keeping it fun for all involved. I am looking forward to increasing the numbers of players at the club, & hopefully getting more players into interclub teams. The junior registration days are:
Saturday September 1st,
Wednesday September 5th, &
Sunday September 9th, so come down & register. The earlier you are enrolled the easier it is for us to get the club up & running.

As well as the Friday night & Sunday morning club tennis the Club & I have got together to organise some tennis in the local schools close by the club. These sessions are just a taste for school pupils who have not played very much tennis before, to get them interested in the sport, hopefully join our club, slot into the club coaching programmes, & from there into my after school programmes as well.

Tiny tennis is a new programme that is starting this season. It is a coaching programme for the 4 - 6 year old tennis players that runs over two terms throughout the summer. The lessons cover all of the strokes, & we will play lots of games to maintain interest & enthusiasm with our younger players! Each new tiny tennis player will receive a free Junior racquet to get them started. Tiny Tennis runs on Monday afternoons from 4.30 - 5.00 or from 5.00 to 5.30 and is due to start on the 15 October 2001.

The holiday tennis camps run each school holidays for both weeks, & are very popular in the summer time.

The next holiday Camps are September 24 - 28 and October 1 - 5. Enrolment forms will be down at the club, or you can just call me direct.

Because of the wonderful support that you have shown me over the last year, I am now looking at taking on some extra tennis coaches. Evan Smith will be assisting me in coaching at the club this season. Evan has coached as part of the Central Districts Programme under Peter Simpson & as part of the Junior Tennis Wellington Region junior programmes around the region, he plays Regional One interclub (number one) & has been ranked in the top ten under 18's in New Zealand. Now Evan is coming into the Atomic Tennis programmes to help me build our Club to yet another level. With Evan's help, this season should be the biggest & best so far. I will be able to run more after school junior squads, & more group adult coaching programmes. So if you are keen then please do let me know.

I would also like to give some praise to the junior players who have continued to train throughout the winter months early in the mornings (6.20 - 7.50 a.m.). I am very proud of the commitment & drive they have shown to continue to enthusiastically hit balls at that time of the day!

Also thanks goes to all of the surrounding houses who have not yet complained about the lights shining in & waking them up at 6 am......

Here is looking forward to a great summer season.
Gene

THE COACH - ATOMIC TENNIS

There have been changes in Junior tennis Wellington Region, Gebhard Gritsch has resigned so there is no longer a regional Coach.
But we are fortunate because our Club has the best Coach in the region so who needs JTWR.

Telephone Gene - mobile 025 230 1914
For all your coaching information, or just come down to the Club most afternoons where you will find him working.

Gene has junior group coaching at The Club weekdays after school & provides lessons from beginners to advanced players.

The Club has negotiated special rates for Club members with Gene. So make sure he knows you are a member.

CLAUDE ENGLAND

I have just been sent the Mid Altantic Newsletter for USTA/Maryland. Claude England was a very good junior at our Club quite a few years ago. He is the Founder & Director of the Baltimore Tennis Academy & a Director at the Chestnut Ridge Country Club. He has been coaching in the USA now for more than 25 years.
Claude has represented the USA in different teams events & last year played in the number one singles position in the 45+ Dubler Cup in Paraguay which was won by the USA. He has held more than 30 State tennis titles and is arguably one of NZ's most successful tennis players.

TRIVIA

In 1927 Billie Tapscott of South Africa caused a sensation at Wimbledon by appearing on court without wearing stockings.

1939 was the first year at Wimbledon when all the players served overhead.

NZ TENNIS

John Donaghy has recently been appointed to a Player Participation Working Group established by NZ Tennis.

This NZT group will endeavour to prepare plans to increase player participation in NZ from Beginner to Advanced level across all ages. If anyone has ideas how tennis might be improved for them please send them to me as soon as possible.

MIDWEEK MEMO

Midweek tennis has been popular over the winter - Tuesdays seem to have been fine days.

The Midwinter Solstice lunch was held on 19 June combined with a fun tournament. A sunny day, plenty of spot prizes followed by delicious soups & breads made this a really memorable morning. This was followed up with a coffee & muffin morning on 31 July. We do play enough tennis to warrant the carbohydrates and its certainly enjoyable!

Winter midweek interclub finishes in mid - August with playoffs. Between the interclub seasons there will be a monthly league running on a Tuesday morning. Ring Ros if you are interested.

Summer Opening Day is 4 September. If wet then 10.30 am.
Do encourage your friends to come along. There will be a fun tournament & there is sure to be good food..... m

REGIONAL

Mt. Ruapehu may have just had a record breaking snowfall but the summer
tennis season is not that far away.

From the 26th August intending Regional
players are encouraged to come down to the club on Sunday afternoons for
some practice sessions.

On Sunday September 2nd Gene is using the courts all day so the practice session will be on Saturday 1st for that weekend. Remember, if you know of any players that are looking to play Regional and don't have a team at the right level at their club bring them along to Lower Hutt.

The winter rain has come frequently on Sundays & most teams in the Wellington Regional interclub have at least one match unplayed. The grade C & D teams are out in front on the points table & the B team is lying 3rd equal. The E grade team is in the middle of their grade with the remaining two teams, A & F, well down but still having enjoyable, competitive matches.

There may be some major changes in the Regional format this year but more about this when we have more information.

You must complete and return the Registration form with your Subscription by the 2 September if you want to play in a regional team.

Is there a volunteer who would like to find & obtain sponsors for our regional teams this season..

INTERCLUB

If you are want to play WEEKEND, MIDWEEK, or NIGHT Interclub you must complete & return the enclosed Registration Form with your Subscription urgently.

Those who indicate an interest will be advised of dates for trials if necessary.

We have not yet been advised of team fees by the Association so we can not yet confirm interclub fees for the season.

LEAGUES

WEDNESDAY NIGHT LEAGUE
There are 8 teams competing in the Winter League, undeterred by frosty nights. This should be completed by 22 August with a Potluck & social tennis night at 7 pm on 29 August. Someone mentioned gluwein so the tennis could be interesting.
There will be social tennis nights until the Summer League begins 19 September. Entries for this league by 5 September please to Stewart Ph 938 9746 or e-mail stewartbush@the.net.nz, or to Ros - Ph 938 1951 or e-mail rands.read@clear.net.nz.

We will ask on the registration form whether you want us to arrange to play a league on Saturdays or a singles league on Monday nights during the summer. It will depend on interest whether or not we arrange.

There is always greater interest during the summer months so get your name in early.
