LOWER HUTT TENNIS CLUB CROSS COURT JUNE/JULY 2001

......FROM THE EDITOR

My son has just returned home for a short visit to play his annual game of tennis against me……?

He arranged to video me while playing .

Why didn't you all tell me what I looked like on the tennis court - I might then have given up years ago. When I still had a figure. When the legs & arms moved with grace. Before I had a stomach.

The moral - don't let yourself be video-ed unless you are young enough to have some control over the physical.

Next season the subscription for everyone might be $140.
If you have any individual thoughts on this then write to The Club.

THE COACH

I have had a few people asking how far back from the net to stand when you are the servers partner. When starting at the net I recommend you start in the middle of the servers box. This way you are in the middle of all possible returns

That come your way. If you start a racquets length or even a step back from the net you may find you get lobbed all the time. By standing just a little farther back you make it just that much harder for opponents to lob you, & give yourself a little more time to react to the volley & in general cover more of the court. Remember this is a starting position & you need to adjust your position as you see the rally progressing

Winter Coaching.

Coaching programs for adults & juniors are running throughout the winter months. Winter is the best time to learn some new strokes or fine tune that back hand!!!

Adults

Monday morning hitting sessions from 9.30 - 11.00 am are continuing right through the winter. Just turn up. You can call me if you think the weather is dodgy. Also have space during the day for mid week interclub teams for some doubles positioning & tactics.

Junior Holiday Camps

July 2 -6 & July 9 - 13

These are coming up again. Give me a call or check my web page www.atomictennis.com for details.

Winter Juniors

This is proving to be very popular & we are still taking new enrolments. This is a fun & fast couple of hours singles & doubles & other fun games. There are a full range of abilities so all are being catered for. We would like to see more players so come along next week & just try it out.

Thanks

I would like to thank all those players who supported me during the summer, to congratulate them on a summer of improvement, & thank all the club members for putting up with my tennis balls flying across the courts. I am having a great time. Moving to the Lower Hutt Tennis Club was the best move I could have made….thanks!

Telephone me on 025 230 1914 for more details on anu of the above.

NZ TENNIS

John Donaghy has recently been appointed to a Player Participation Working Group established by NZ Tennis.

This NZT group will endeavour to prepare plans to increase player participation in NZ from Beginner to Advanced level across all ages. If anyone has ideas how tennis might be improved for them please send them to me as soon as possible.

The elections for the new Midweek sub committee were also held on this day with the appointment of a healthy 12 strong committee headed by the new Midweek Club Captain Ros Read who took over this mantle from an inspirational Una Haverfield.

The social visit to Whitby finally took place on 24 April after rain & school holiday delays. 10 players with Bet as a supporter enjoyed games against Whitby & Ngati Toa followed by morning tea.

Team European treated us to a close up of a VW Beetle & Golf. There didn't seem to be any immediate sales but we did enjoy the sumptuous morning tea they provided.

INTERCLUB

The highest place in the summer interclub was a 3rd in Grade 1 with mixed results in the other grades. Everyone enjoyed their games however & this is reflected in 4 teams being entered into the winter interclub series.

A Midwinter Solstice lunch is planned for the 19th June with a fun tournament beginning at 9.30am

REGIONAL

The team placings for the year were as follows

Women's Regional

1 41 3rd

2 49 2nd

3 45 3rd

Men's Regional

2 32 6th

3 34 4th

Masters

1 105 3rd

Our congratulations to Julie Scott who won the Regional Player of the year award.

Julie has performed so consistently & has continued to win most of her games even when facing much younger players. She is a real credit to our Club.

TENNIS ETIQUETTE

I hate it when the receiver on a serve hits the 1st serve back when it is obviously a fault.  This is not polite and besides it holds up the game. You don't do this do you?

When you are entering or leaving your court & must pass behind the other courts wait until the point has finished on that court before you cross behind.  This is especially important when senior or junior interclub matches are being played. The match is important to them even if you are not interested.

Who cares about other players…….?  DO NOT cross behind a court with players on it until they have finished playing the point.

LEAGUES

Monday Night

If you want harder hitting come along on Mondays. We will arrange both singles & doubles for you. There is no formal league but there is usually some great tennis.

Wednesday Night

The 12 teams competing in the summer league Had their final night on 11 April. The winning team members were Alan Young, Pat Clegg, Tama Watkins & Carolyn Tongue. Runners up were Nigel Westerby, Simon Bird, Richard Hudson & Jean Pugh. Autumn league has followed with several new players in the 10 teams. The nights have been shortened by many teams organising a 6.30 pm start. The final night for this round is 13 June. Presentations for both leagues will be made on 20 June when there will be a POT LUCK Dinner & Social Tennis night starting at 7pm. The Winter League will start on 27 June - please get your entries in by 13 June

Don't forget to arrange for a member of your team to bring a plate & if it is your duty night remember the milk

Reserves are always needed phone Ros Read 938 1951 or Stewart 938 9746

Saturday Afternoon

Tennis will be organised each Saturday right through the winter. No league will operate.

RESIGNATIONS

Our Constitution requires ALL resignations to be in writing. This can be by Email to LowerHutt@tennismail.com or Post to PO Box 45020, Epuni.

PARENTS

Please make sure your children do not have black soled tennis shoes. Scooters bikes & roller blades are not allowed on any of the courts. These will be confiscated without further notice if seen being used on the courts at any time. Bubble & chewing gum is being spat out on the courts. This causes serious damage to the plexi pave.

I am sure your children are not the guilty ones.

I am sure you will make sure they continue that way.
