LOWER HUTT TENNIS CLUB CROSS COURT MARCH/APRIL 2001

......FROM THE EDITOR

Christmas seems such a long time ago. But wasn't it great.
He brought us 4 new courts as well as a little excitement for the Juniors before the end of December.

I know most of you will have seen our new court surfaces. Its a shame that many of you don't really care about The Club.                                                                     Click on the pictire for a larger view.

Or appreciate the facility you have.
You don't agree….…?
Who leaves their gum on the plexi courts?
Who walks past that discarded drink bottle?
Who leaves their cup or glass unwashed?
Who rides their bike or scooter on the courts?
Who wears shoes that mark the courts?
Who leaves their rubbish for other?
Who leaves everything for
someone else to organise?

CLUB CAPTAINS CORNER

Last month we held our 2000/2001 season Club Championships. The weather was perfect & the programme went smoothly. Elsewhere in this Newsletter you will find the results. Congratulations not only to the winners & runner-ups but to all the participants. The numbers were a little down but nevertheless the competition was strong. The low participation was disappointing as the event provided an opportunity for Club members to get together not only for competitive tennis but also for socialising & the creation of Club " spirit ". Many of us only play on Saturday afternoons or on one of the league nights [or worse, only in interclub teams] & miss out on meeting & knowing other Club members who play at different times.

A thriving club requires active involvement & a willingness by members to assist with such things as the support of weaker players, fund raising & working parties. I ask that members consider this & not just expect that payment of their subscription should be their only commitment to The Club.

With the resurfacing of the Astroturf on courts 1 & 2 & the laying of plexipave over the asphalt on courts 9 and 10 The Club now has 10 courts of superior quality. Already, however, some damage has occurred with cycles, scooters & black- soled shoes marking the surface. Would members & parents please be watchful in protecting the courts. They are expensive & it may be some years before we are financially able to do further upgrades.

Over the past couple of months I have become aware of the large numbers of non members who are using our courts. I have even come across non member foursomes who have entered the playing area having been given the key code by 'friends'. We are now going to toughen up on this situation.

The courts are not public courts & their provision & maintenance are the responsibility [ & expense ] of the members. A large part of your subscription is needed for court maintenance & it is not fair that members should in effect pay for the play of non members .Members who bring guests are required to ensure a visitors fee is put in the honesty box by the Club room's western doors. Envelopes will be provided. This applies also to family groups. Having a son or daughter as a member does not entitle a parent to play with them on the courts.

It is only by being vigilant in this regard that future subscription rates can be constrained. Members who do not abide by these requirements place their membership at risk.

THE COACH

"HIT THE BALL OVER THE NET!"

When playing doubles hit a solid & simple return of serve. Most points are won & lost in the first couple of shots in the rally. If you can hit a solid return, usually cross court back to the server then you are immediately putting your team in with a good chance of winning the point.

Often players go for too much with their return & give away easy points with their mistakes. Hit a good return & wait for an opportunity to hit the winner.

Up & coming coaching.

Adults

Group sessions on Tuesdays from 6-7 pm starting on 2 April at a cost of $5. Will try & keep groups to 6 players.

These will run 9-13 April & 16-20 April

VISITOR FEES

Enclosed with this NEWSLETTER is an envelope to be used for "green fees" Just like the golf clubs.

We have just spent $55000 upgrading our courts for the benefit of MEMBERS.

If you bring along a visitor or decide you want a hit with your father or mother please ask them to complete & pay for this privilege by completing this form & depositing with money through the slot in the door.

There are many who continually abuse

The Club by not paying these fees.

You can not bring along another person to play a game unless you pay a visitors fee for them.

MIDWEEK MEMO

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Despite the fact some schools had not started back by 31 January & with Waitangi Day on 6 February attendance on club days began well.
The Club Champs are under way with 14 entries in the singles & 13 in the doubles. There have been some hard matches in the early rounds so the Plate & Saucer events will be exciting. There have been some exciting possibilities for the next interclub season.
A social visit to Whitby has been arranged for Tuesday 27 March. The visit from Khandallah has been delayed until after Easter.
It is not easy to arrange these social events because of changes to the school terms but we are persevering. On Tuesday 3 April we will hold a social event at The Club.
Don't forget the Renouf Centre night & the Zoo trip. Remember you can also play in the Wednesday night leagues. These are tremendously popular. Do you think we should hold something like this for you on Tuesdays.
If you won a club champ trophy last season please return ASAP to Una

TENNIS ETIQUETTE

When you are entering or leaving your court & must pass behind the other courts wait until the point has finished on that court before you cross behind.

This is especially important when senior or junior interclub matches are being played. The match is important to them even if you are not interested.

Who cares about other players…….?

DO NOT cross behind a court with players on it until they have finished playing the point.

LEAGUES

Monday Night

No one wants to organise this night so numbers are not high. It has been suggested this be restricted to stronger players only to encourage Regional players to come along.

If you want harder hitting come along on Mondays. We will arrange both singles & doubles for you.

Wednesday Night

This midweek night continues to be extremely popular. The latest League began on 31 January with 12 teams making the most of 10 great courts & daylight saving.. This will run until 11 April ending with a potluck dinner that night at 6 pm. Prize giving for the pre Christmas league will be held the same night. The winners of this were Team 1-Nigel Westerby, Alan Husheer, Mick Bolland, & Barbara Knauf with runners up Alan Young, Tui Snow, Rudy van Baale & John Leeny.

Tentative dates for 2001 leagues are

Autumn: 18 April - 30 May

Winter: 6 June - 18 July

Spring: 25 July - 5 September

Summer 2 26 September - 5 December

This gives us a couple of weeks spare for unforeseen circumstances but as a general rule if the night is cancelled by weather then the round is cancelled not postponed.

Members of teams should remind their Captains to organise a roster to bring a plate. Remember some players have not had time for dinner. Remember your duty night-don't forget the milk.

Reserves are always needed so if you feel like an occasional game please phone Ros Read 938 1951 or Stewart 938 9746

Saturday Afternoon

On the 1st Saturday afternoon of every month we hold a fun tournament followed by drinks & perhaps a barbecue.

Te OMANGA HOSPICE

A brilliant day in the sun describes this fund raising event which was held at The Club on 24 February. After all the preparations, plans, work etc the day dawned as we had hoped for- brilliant sunshine.

So it was…."Let the games begin" More than 40 players attended plus others just for lunch.

Pat Sheehan with his usual flair arranged mixed, ladies & men's doubles at half hour intervals for the young, the old, the good and the not so good players but all lovers of the game of tennis. One of the non players was heard to remark "he had been to many fund raising events but this rated the best ever where people actually enjoyed helping the Hospice."

At 12.30 dinner was served & what a feast. The Angus Inn Hotel served a superb meal with wonderful service from their staff. We could have wined & dined all afternoon but no-John Donaghy-what a pain-but with his usual enthusiasm got everyone on the court for a serious "How fast is your serve" competition.

Pat Lambert holding the radar gun was not impressed. No one would get to Wimbledon

Pat Clegg was the fastest man with 92 kmh.

No one guessed Eileen Cullen was such a fast woman Oh! Oh! Sorry Eileen I mean quick.

Prizes totalling more than $2000 were drawn in the raffle & after a speech from Murray Bond who thanked those who organised the day & a few more drinks we all went home absolutely tired out. Colleen Neazor

PARENTS

Please make sure your children do not have black soled tennis shoes. Scooters bikes & roller blades are not allowed on any of the courts. These will be confiscated without further notice if seen being used on the courts at any time. Bubble & chewing gum is being spat out on the courts. This causes serious damage to the plexi pave.

I am sure your children are not the guilty ones.

I am sure you will make sure they continue that way.
