REGIONAL RESULTS:
Men
1 3rd
3 4th
Women
1 4th
2 2nd
2 3rd
4 3rd
The new Regional season is tentatively 9 October to 27 November 2004 so that will allow plenty of time to prepare the bodies against all those injuries which plagued us this year.
A special thanks to Ora. Those not involved do not realise just how much work is required to organise the Regional teams.

Regional 4/ Division 1 Ladies
Ros Read's team has been going great guns post Christmas & has not lost a match so far. There have been a number of reserves called upon to help out & they have done well, notably Judy Young having a great tussle in her singles with 2 tiebreaker sets!!. Most importantly they have enjoyed the experience of playing singles grade interclub.

The Regional 4 team found the first few matches quite tough, but were still able to win some of the games. But they have now had a 3 all win and a 6-0 win and are well ahead in one match that has had to be rearranged a couple of times because of the weather.

JUNIOR NEWSLETTER

Welcome back to the second half of the summer (supposedly) tennis season. Unfortunately we have only had 3 Friday night sessions &1 on a Sunday. If the weather looks doubtful a cancellation message will be left on the club phone (569 6872).

SUNDAY MORNINGS

Just a reminder that the first session is from 9 to 10.30am & is predominately for beginners & those aged 6 - 11 looking at increasing their basic skills.

The second group is from 10.30 -12 & is for those who can hit the ball reasonably well & aged from 9 - 16.

FRIDAY EVENINGS

Friday evening tennis is for interclub players to practise as a team & for those who do not play interclub but are of a similar standard. Please note that there will be no ladder challenges during the early session - the idea of this session is to practice as an interclub team & to get coaching from Flo. To attend you must be able to play games and keep the score. Jackie & Elizabeth are running the first session from 5 to 6.30 during which games are organised &Flo is able to concentrate on coaching small groups. The second session is from 6.30 until 8 & is for those members in 3rd form & above. Flo is usually available during this time to offer coaching advice & practiCe.

LADDER CHALLENGES

Ladder challenges were very successful pre Christmas . For those wanting to play interclub next season your position on the ladder may be used to help determine what grade and team you are placed in. It is therefore VERY IMPORTANT that you make & accept challenges over the next few months in order to improve your tennis & give the interclub selectors an idea of your playing ability. As a financial member you have access to the courts after school &on weekends & you need to organise challenges outside of the junior coaching sessions on Friday night & Sunday morning.

JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPS

We were very lucky to have a beautiful summer weekend when we held the Junior Club Champs. Despite the frustration of only having 4 courts available on Saturday (the open girls singles had to be played at Hutt Intermediate) we managed to get through quite a lot of the games. The conduct of the competitors both on & off the code was excellent which made the job of the organisers much easier and helped to make things run reasonably smoothly. Some very competitive tennis was played and the future of junior tennis looks excellent. The hours of coaching and practice that the entrants and their parents have put in certainly showed in the high level of tennis played. There are still some games to be completed but the results so far are shown elsewhere in this Newsletter.

LADDER
Ladder challenges are still being played and it is important that these continue over the winter if you wish to be considered for interclub teams next year. Rankings on the ladder will form part of the decision as to what team you will be placed in next season.

END OF SEASON
This is fast approaching with the final Friday night session on Friday 2 April. Prizegiving (to which everyone is invited) will be at 6.30pm and we ask that everyone bring a plate. If wet then prizegiving will take place at 6pm.
The final Sunday morning session is 4 April and both groups are asked to bring a plate for morning tea which will be at the end of each session.

LOST PROPERTY

The box is full so please check for any clothing that you may not even notice has gone missing.

WINTER TENNIS

The 1st Friday after the school holidays will see the start of the winter tennis season. This will be every Friday from 5 - 7 pm and the cost will be $ 60.

CHALLENGE

from John Donaghy
To all those men out there who would like to join me & play midweek tennis on Tuesday mornings. I intend starting at the end of March - see you there.

MIDWEEK MEMO

Midweek 2004 started in January with the best of intentions but the weather had other ideas. This time I disappeared to sunny Canada while you were all drowning.... March just has to be fine. We have had the first day of the singles champs with two rounds successfully completed. Doubles begin on 16th March. We've welcomed five keen members to midweek : Christine Kibblewhite, Kate DentRennie, Karen Maggs, Adela Jones and Rebecca Lafonte. They have all entered for the champs so we have full draws for both singles and doubles.
Tuesday, 30th March is the date for the Red Cross Ladies' Charity Doubles Tournament to be played at Mitchell Park. The midweekers are running this in association with the Lower Hutt branch of the NZ Red Cross. This is a fun day's tennis open to all female players; club or social & with or without partners. The Red Cross ladies are superb cooks too! (see notice board for details).
The Stokes Valley Midweek tournament was held recently with many Lower Hutt entries. Best results - Sheryl Edgar and Ros Read lost the A final.
Interclub is progressing well with two rounds to play. All five teams maintained their grades prior to Christmas. Winter interclub will start the week after the April school holidays.
A hard-core are enjoying Thursday mornings but we could always do with more drifters. If you'd like an extra hour's exercise in your week remember to come!

FUTURE OF MITCHELL PARK

On 15 March I attended a meeting of the Hutt Valley Tennis Association to discuss the future of the Mitchell Park Complex. It was attended by about 30 people, representing most of the clubs in the Hutt Valley.

The meeting was unanimous in the following points:

· The court surface and lights required work for them to be adequate for interclub.
· Several covered courts would be great but how could it be financed.
· Mitchell Park was needed to provide a facility for interclub
· All clubs were struggling to find volunteers.
Other issues that were discussed included

· Were there too many Tennis Associations in the Wellington Region? Should Hutt Valley join with Wellington?
· The poor financial status of the Mitchell Park Squash Club
· Should a Tennis Club be formed at Mitchell Park to utilize the facilities?
· What support/guidance could New Zealand Tennis offer us?
I'm sure everyone will be please to hear that Mitchell Park has funding to replace some of the lights in the next month or so. Winter interclub will not now have to be played in the dark.

The meeting resolved to canvass the clubs on their support for revamping the Mitchell Park complex. Another meeting will be held at the end of April
