LOWER HUTT TENNIS CLUB CROSS COURT November/December 2003 |
......FROM THE EDITOR |
|
I have just received another 3 year ANNUAL PLAN from NZ Tennis. You have to admire them - they are experts at putting out Annual Plans even although they can never actually complete anything which is contained in them
.. ...and they complain about the state of tennis in NZ. Fortunately even without an Annual Plan our Club has progressed & continues to attract new members both senior & junior each year. While our location & excellent facilities help it is really the high standard of volunteers we have who put such a huge effort into making sure that the separate areas of the Club function extremely well. You will be pleased to hear we have a sub committee appointed to make decisions regarding extending the lights to courts 7 & 8 & generally improving our lighting. We know the light on Court 1 has been out for some time but parts are no longer available & any solution is going to be very expensive so please bear with us. It seems a long time ago but we did have an opening day at the end of Aiugust (a long time ago) & we have the pictures to prove it. If the mayor could attend with so many club members why weren't you there? EDITOR PO BOX 45020, LOWER HUTT FAX 566 8041 EMAIL: LowerHutt@tennismail.com |

MONDAY LEAGUE |
|
We are getting about 15 players on a Monday night. We usually each play a singles and a doubles. As the nights improve, a third game will be introduced. The tennis is of a good standard. However it has been noted that we are frequently playing the same people. So we would welcome some more players. if you are keen then come down on a Monday night at 7pm for a singles. There is a hard core who will be there every Monday Trevor |

CAR PARK |
|
Please stop speeding in the car park and no wheelies. It is expensive to maintain & someone will get hurt if speeds are too high |

WEDNESDAY LEAGUE |
| 3The Wednesday Night League was very popular with 15 teams in the Summer League. This has been a challenge trying to balance all the teams and to get them played as we do not have enough courts with lights for all teams to play on the one night. The competition evenly fought with lots of close games. Everyone is finding them social, very enjoyable and a great way for new members to meet other members. It is great to see the intermediate players participating in the leagues. The leading teams at the mid way stage are 1st Alex Bridger, Tony Green, Lorraine Hollow, Anne Ross 2nd Chester Holmes, Andy Holdaway, Pat Spencer, Odette do Couto 3rd Jack Ng, Adam Bishop, Carole Forbes, Linda Forsyth I would like to thank the reserves for their patience as they have been called on many times through out this league, and a thanks to Alan Young for all his help with organising the league. Unfortunately I will not have much time to run the league next year due to my studies so I will be looking for volunteers to take over this duty. I will gladly help them set up the draws & sheets for running the league. Stewart Bush |

JUNIORS LADDER CHALLENGERS |
|
It's great to see so many of you getting into the spirit of the ladder and making those challenges. It's a great way to improve your tennis, get to know some other club members, and most importantly to enjoy your tennis. The rules about the ladder are on the noticeboard in the clubhouse. Please read them and make sure you keep to them. Like any sports rules, they are there so everybody can enjoy the game. I've included some of the important rules below, with some additional guidelines as well. Please contact me - Kevin Garner 5697452 - if you have any questions or concerns. The ladder positions can only be changed by Kevin Garner. No one else is permitted to touch the names on the ladder. If there is any doubt about the correct positions, consult Kevin Garner who will maintain a master list. At the moment the boys ladder is full so the only way to get on it is to challenge someone and win! If a girl wants to have her name put on the bottom just give me a call. When you have chosen someone you want to challenge, write your name in the Challenger column, the other member's name in the Challenged column, and that day's date. The challenger must then contact the person they are challenging and arrange a time to play the match. Phone numbers of members are on the notice board. The person who is challenged must accept the challenge. Please contact if me if someone refuses to play you. You cannot just win by default. The match does not need to be played immediately. As a general guide, matches should be played within 10 days of the two members talking. Two balls are to be provided by the challenger. These should be in good condition but do not have to be new. All ladder matches will be the first to 7 games. The winner must win by two games. A tiebreaker will be played at 6-all. The players should umpire their own game. The loser cannot immediately challenge the person who has just beaten them. As a general guide, there should be at least a two week gap before the same two players play another ladder challenge. There will be some prize winners announced on the 18th November. Keep our eyes on the notice board for details. Subscriptions The last day for payment of Subscriptions was 31/10/03. Please make payment of your overdue sub& any team fees immediately. If you play Interclub & are not financial your team can lose points If you play in the League & are not financial your team might be penalised. |

We have had a good turnout for Sunday morning tennis despite the unsettled weather. Plenty of new faces with many families joining and spending the whole of Sunday morning at tennis. It's great fun if you can practice with your brother or sister & then even more fun when you can beat them in a game! Word of mouth is a great way of advertising the clubs facilities & Sunday morning tennis certainly beats lying in bed until midday! We have 4 coaches on a Sunday & would like to keep the groups to a managable size in order to keep the children on their toes & learning new skills - we therefore need parents to volunteer to supervise a group. Don't worry if you are not a tennis player, Florent will show you some simple ball or fitness skills to keep the group entertained. You will probably only be rostered on once over the whole season. Please let Flo or Elizabeth (971 4408) know what date you are available. Hats, drink bottles & sunscreen are a must from now on. Friday evenings from 5 to 6.30 are very well patronised with many interclub teams arranging to practise together & others challenging for a place on the ladder. The latter time of 6.30 until 8 pm is for those who are in the 3rd form (when they register) & above. There are plenty of courts available at this time so get a group of friends together and come down for a hit and a chat. Flo is available for a game & some coaching. There is a small but dedicated committee who administer juniotr tennis (interclub, coaching, ladder challenges) for the Club. If you have any ideas or suggestions to improve the way the Club is run we would love to hear from you. |

FISCHER |
| Our Regional I Ladies & Mens teams are now wearing their new Fischer uniforms. A lot of great comments from spectators and other players - we are the best dressed - no doubt. Thank you Jason Grace of Fischer for your assistance. Remember we have demo Fischer racquets at the Club - they are great racquets to play with. |

MIDWEEK MEMO |
|
I don't really feel qualified to write the memo for this newsletter. Stuart and I have spent the last 6 weeks travelling mainly in Southern Africa achieving a lifelong ambition of seeing the wildlife in Etosha National Park in Namibia and the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Other highlights were the huge red dunes of Sossusvlei, spending time with the Bushmen in the Kalahari Desert and whale watching from the cliffs near Cape Town. Two sons gave us the excuse to visit Oxford and Samoa so we completed the circuit fitting in Chicago and New Mexico as well. Midweek tennis opened for summer on 2 September. We welcomed Helen Berry but the ranks seem a bit depleted through people succumbing to working on tennis days! They tell me that the Tuesdays since have often been wet. Summer interclub began in early October with some good results so far. The five teams are Grade 1 Hazel Maurer, Barbara Bridger, Victoria Crone, Christine Archer, Barbara Allen, Paulina Godfrey Grade 2 Lynne Pearce, Judy Hicks, Ros Read, Sheryl Edgar, Sandra Lissette Grade 3 Tui Snow, Jackie Clarke, Tricia Lloyd, Jan Edwards Grade 4 Jocelyn White, Eileen Cullen, Catherine Nash, Jane McDougall, Jane Coles Grade 5 Elizabeth Josephson, Philippa Holdaway, Debbie Nielsen, Anna Geremia-Young Remember that Midweek tennis runs on both Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9.30am. Christmas lunch will be Tuesday, 9 December ( wet or fine). Ros MEN WANTED Are you male

REGIONAL |
|
Men's Regional One: Well the regional competition is into its 4th round and our 5 teams are all doing really well. Our Men's Regional One are currently placed 6th and I feel confident that they will maintain this grade in next years competition. Unfortunately it appears that Thiem will not make it back for the Pre Christmas session & we hope he will be able to make some of the Post Xmas. All credit to Daniel who is still recovering from injury but has still been able to play in. The team members are: Oliver Petri, Ivan Mendoza, James Paulik, Daniel Baxter, Andrew Chuah Men's Regional Three: This team is currently 1st & I see no reason why they should not go on to win this grade taking our team to Regional Two for the next session. The members are: Dave Leesburg, Tony Pietras, Mark Battershill, Steve Parson, Steve McPhee Women's Regional One: This team is placed 1st equal with only one match dropped so far in this session. As described in The Dominion Post recently Lower Hutt were ruthless in their demolition of Vogelmorn winning all matches in straight sets. Well done ladies. Tania Martin, Julie Scott, Jovana Radovic, Jenny Burridge, Lotte Hoffman Women's Regional Two teams. ABIT OF GOSSIP: This year I was forced to move our Women's Regional Three team up to Regional Two due to Thorndon not being able to field a team - refusal to do this would have meant forfeiting our right to enter the Regional Three competition. Not a good situation to be in when at the time we hardly had a team to field let alone of Regional Two standard. This put me in a position where I had to move players from the A team to cover the top positions in the B team. I say this because over the past years our WR2 team has consistently finished 1st in fact they have beaten at least 3 teams who are currently in the Regional One competition but are not eligible to play in that grade because we are only allowed one team from each club. Regardless of the above our WR2 A are still leading the field with WR2 B currently in 3rd placing. These team members are: WR2 A Leonie Quinn, Hannah Baxter, Sylvia Wilmshurst, Pauline Yemm WR2 B Hazel Maurer, Amelia Harris, Hera Swinton Maree Horne. Daphne Chin |

DIVISION TEAMS |
| Our Women's Division One A team is currently in 1st placing, looking at the teams that they have left to play I feel confident that they will win the pre-xmas competition that will enable the girls to play in Regional 4 for the post xmas. The team members are: Barbara Bridger, Kate Nightingale Christine Archer, Kate McGregor Olivia Harris Our Women's Division One B team is currently 3rd. Team members are: Sheryl Edgar, Ros Read, Katherine Grant Nikki Hansen, Jane Nightingale There have been 3 rounds played so far with a maximum of 5 wins (the 2 teams played each other in Round 1). The A team has had one close call with a 3-3 win over Stokes Valley/Naenae and 2 easier wins, and the B team has had comfortable wins over Wainui and Pinehaven. The juniors in the teams have been playing very good doubles as well as singles and it is the seniors who go for the 3 set matches and tie breaker sets!! Everyone has been enjoying the matches and the teams have been more settled this year with less call for reserves, but we have been grateful to Zelma for filling in, and to Tui for being available to fill in but the weather got in the way Mens Division Two A team are placed 1st after the second round, their team is very strong & if they don't lose any players I expect them to be promoted to Men's Division One. The team is: Trevor Dine, Geoff Curtis, Frazer Wilkinson, Steve Denholm Men's Division Two B are about mid way. The team members are: Richard Wade, Matt Keenan, Alex MacDonald, Richard Gibbons Men's Division Four are currently in first placing after the 3rd round. Clive Jepson, Michael Volkov, Nick Schembri, Peter Vrecic, Phillip Pennell PRESIDENTS: President Premier is currently 1st equal with Paraparaumu, I'm also very confident to say that they will win this competition, last year we won the Pre but lost the Post to Paraparaumu. The team members this year are: Malcolm Alexander, Evan Baxter Julie Scott, Leonie Quinn Sylvia Wilmshurst President's Division One is also in 1st placing, their team members are: Peter Howse, Paul Sinclair Tui Snow, Ora Whaanga President's Division Two A are: Kathy Brabin, Margaret Walker Dick Werry, Gerald Burns President's Division Two B are: Rose Douglas, Jill Wilcox Simon Wells, Alex Bridger Presidents Division Two C are: Anna Young, Maureen Fairweather Sue Anderson, Dave Chin Pat Clegg RESERVES Only financial members are permitted to play for the Club. If non members are used HVT will be advised & points will be deducted from that team.. |
