LOWER HUTT TENNIS CLUB CROSS COURT October/November 2001 |
......FROM THE EDITOR |
|
This week I received a card from a Club member
thanking me for my contribution to Club activities. It is nice to know
that some of you actually do care about what your Committee do.
As Pat Clegg reminds us in his letter this is the year of the Volunteer. So how about you all let one of the Committee know that you appreciate their efforts. It will make them feel really great to hear this. In the last Newsletter a request was made for a Volunteer to be our Club Captain. Please let us know if you are interested. The Club still needs a Club Captain. |
|
NEW MEMBERS |
|
We have been fortunate to be able to welcome
so many new members to the Club this season. They are an interesting lot
& I can recommend you find time to talk with them. For those who may
not be proficient tennis players - remember you could not play either when
you started - so try to help them enjoy their games.
If you know of other players suggest they
visit The Club to see for themselves how we enjoy ourselves. Alternately
they can telephone one of the Club Contacts for more information |
|
CLERK OF WORKS |
| When you see rubbish on or around the courts
pick it up & dispose of it. If you don't then it means another job for
a member of the Committee.
Don't lean on the nets. It stretches the
wire & the net sags & cannot be tightened. Someone has to bring
tools & spend time refastening the ends & until they do that you
have to play on a court with a net which is too low. |
|
JUNIORS |
|
The junior players from the Club made up
eleven of the 24 players of a Wellington Regional Team that travelled away
to Hamilton for the quadrangular event in the first week of the school
holidays. These Players were; Richard Gibbons, Michael Pigou, Alex MacDonald, Amelia Harris, Sophie MacDonald, Louise MacDonald, Jovana Mastilovic, Sam Vinton-Boot, Thiem Ngyuen, Daniel Baxter & Hannah Baxter. These players combined with players from the rest of the Wellington region managed to win a major quadrangular tournament for the Wellington region . This was the first major victory for something like twenty years. So congratulations. After the quad event there was the
individual age group championships. Not a bad hall of titles......all of the
player bluntly refused to give their coach a percentage of their prize
money.....I can't quite understand why? Registrations for juniors and the interclub trials went well. There has been a welcome increase in registrations & we have significantly increased the number of interclub teams. The standard of play is good & a team of girls has been entered in the regional boys competition. A reminder for newer members, don't forget, you can play at times other than your coaching so ask another member for a game or bring down a friend - if you bring along a non-member to play, they should pay the $5 visitor fee. I would encourage you to put your name on the ladder - playing ladder matches is especially important for interclub players, since it gives you practice & helps us choose teams. You may change the ladder card order ONLY after notifying Chester on 938 1606 of the match result. To help you along, we are organising a
ladder event on Labour Day (Monday 22nd October) start at 11am. Can a few
parents be asked to help with this please. |

|
You must be in the 4th form or higher to join
this group and must be a member of the Club
A great way to end the school week & get rid of those cobwebs from too much study. If you have any ideas you would like us to implement please let us know. For example would you like a disco evening, do you want to play club champs, do we need a CD player. If you don't tell us then how can we make your club a better place for you. You all use the internet - send us an email. LowerHutt@tennismail.com

VISITORS FEES |
| No member can bring a non member
including members of their family or visitors from out of town to play on
the courts unless a visitors fee of $5 is paid each time. If you pay a MIDWEEK subscription this only entitles you to play in organised Midweek activities. Why don't you consider paying a Family Subscription to cover all members of your family at all times. This will then cover those times when a parent might want to come down for a game with their children. No courts are public courts. The public may be permitted to use the facilities but only when the courts are open for play & only upon payment of $10 per hour court hire. |

THE COACH - ATOMIC TENNIS |
|
Tennis Tip: Talk to your doubles partner! I watch people playing doubles and there is very little communication going on. You should be supporting your partners, letting them know when they have hit a good shot, and consoling them after a tough miss and preparing them for a good positive attack on the next point. Also talk tactics to each other, and explain what you are going to do with your shot so they know what to expect. Good Doubles! Coaching Programmes: Tiny Tennis is starting on the 15th of October. I am excited about this as it is great to see so many youngsters wanting to play tennis, and they have such amazing energy and enthusiasm for the game (and everything that they like!). It should be great fun, 4.30 - 5.30 every Monday afternoon! Interclub: I am pleased to see that all of the Regional Interclub Teams won theIr first round matches, especially please with Daniel Baxter, and Thiem Nguyen wins in my regional two team. Well done all Regional players! Lets hope that the Hutt Valley competition teams do equally as well this weekend! I will make my debut in a couple of weeks! Junior Club Coaching: Well that is all from me. Play Hard and have fun! Just before the holidays the Club arranged
for Gene to visit & introduce tennis to 5/7 year olds at 6 schools
close to the Club. This meant contact with approx 400 children. A free
lesson at the Club was offered & 50 took advantage of this promotion. |

ETIQUETTE |

REGIONAL |
|
It is really fantastic that Forsyth Barr have
agreed to sponsor the Regional girls again. Thank you Mick Bolland for
your assistance.
Please make sure you talk with them for all your Investment advice. Tell them you are a member of the Lower Hutt Tennis Club so they know their sponsorship works. Forsyth Barr Regional 1 Women Regional 2 Women Regional 3 Women Playing order is subject to challenges
being made. There are Regional teams playing at Lower Hutt every week of
the competition starting from the 6th October, so this gives club members
a chance to see some good interclub tennis and support our teams while
enjoying their own afternoon play. Also if you feel like making the trip
into the Renouf Centre our Regional 1 Women's team will be playing there
most weeks and have indoor matches on the 24th November. Regional 2 Men Regional 3 Men This season the regional teams will play 5 matches before & 5 matches after Christmas - unfortunately this may mean an increase in interclub fees due to the extra ball costs. In the 1st round of the competition all of our Regional Teams had good wins. The most memorable game however must go to Ora who was still playing her singles at 7 pm for her 6 October match. TENNIS IS A GAME OF LIFE |
|
A tennis match is a violent psychological
struggle. Both antagonists are fighting for their own egos, seeking ways
to strengthen their sense of power & enhance their self-images. Does this sound a little overblown? After all, a tennis match is just a game. But what is a game other than a contest of sorts, played to obtain strictly psychological currency? Certainly, it is to be distinguished from "real" contests where more vital interests are at stake, such as food, shelter, security & other things necessary for the preservation of life. In tennis, as in all games, there is a social facade based on rules & etiquette that attempts to shield both the viewer and the competitor from the harsher elements of the combat. The need to win in a nice gentlemanly fashion is instilled into us very early. But beneath that clean, white veneer, a tennis match has all the potential required to become nasty, threatening & rough. This is true because, deep down, we all want to win no matter how reluctant we are to admit it to ourselves or to others. And if it is necessary to become nasty on court in order to win, many people will get nasty. No matter what kind of genteel attitude your opponent may display, you don't really know what he is like until it gets down to the crunch. He may want to win very badly. Don't allow yourself to get so caught up in the game that you forget about the etiquette. |

LETTER TO THE EDITOR |
|
During World War II they used to say "
careless talk costs lives," whereas now the penalty of loose talk is
having to write up what you said for the Newsletter. My remarks on the debate of a possible increase in the Club's membership subscriptions were not based on the Net Operating Loss of $2505 for the year ended 31 May 2001 (not a very healthy result), but on what additional capital items the Club could be planning to provide for its members. We are indeed thankful that Courts 1 & 2 were resurfaced with new astrograss & Courts 9&10 with plexi pave. This was a good start to the new millennium, but there are a number of other features that could be looked at as well. My wish list is as follows: The clubhouse needs to be extended to provide for a separate storage area, upgrading the men's cloakroom & the shower facility, provision of space for the Coach with some meeting area & re-arranging the area where people gather presently in between games to make it more user-friendly (I am unable to comment on the state of the Ladies Cloakroom). The car park is well overdue to be re-surfaced (a major cost item) and a couple of night lights would help to avoid the potholes. Night lighting for Courts 7 & 8 would be good for the Wednesday night league and this would improve the night lighting for Court 6 which is not good. Continuing to keep the state of the wire fences surrounding the property up to standard. No doubt there will be other items that could be included on the list. It is suggested that the Management Committee consider formulating a list of capital priorities to be undertaken over the next 5 years for ratification at the next AGM. These works would progressively be completed & paid for by a capital levy being incorporated into the membership subscription, along with some creative fund raising. Progressively the facilities of the Club would be maintained & standards raised so as to attract a growing & strengthened membership. In this "Year of the Volunteer" I would like to pay tribute to all those members who regularly sacrifice their time to arrange the matches & all the other things that make belonging to and playing at the Club such an enjoyable experience.
