CLUB CAPTAINS CORNER

We are now well into the season & everything is running smoothly. Kind spring weather, except for the August 24 Opening Day, has enabled good use of the courts & the easing back into condition for us all. Interest in the Club is strong & we have had the pleasure of welcoming many new members.
Opening Day, once again, was spoilt by heavy rain. Nevertheless a group of about 12 did attend, played a little, listened appreciatively to advice from President Barbara, enjoyed some original refreshments & mostly disappeared before the Mayor arrived to present the " opening address".
A couple of weeks later we participated in the pre interclub Top Club competition tournament at Mitchell Park to defend the title we won last year. Despite the absence of many of our leading players we performed extremely well which augers well for the coming competitions.
It is pleasing to see the strength within the Club and the practice, which is being undertaken by our competitive players who mostly arrange their own games. But remember that Saturday afternoon from 1.30 onwards is the main social tennis day for the Club. It is the time for we less competitive members to have their time, with games of 20 minutes played & with the players being shuffled around. It is the time to welcome new members & to encourage the less skilled. Come along and assist in this enjoyment.
On Saturday 19 October we held a fun Yankee tournament for members (no entry forms or fees required ) with prizes, afternoon tea, & a barbecue - intermediate juniors were also welcome.
It was a beautiful day & about 40 people turned up (including 6 new members) to enjoy good tennis followed by drinks & a barbecue
Mick

NEW MEMBERS

We have had many new members joining in recent weeks. Please make sure they are looked after. Don't wait - introduce yourself .
If you have friends who may be interested invite them to visit The Club on Wednesday nights or Saturday afternoons to see for themselves how we enjoy ourselves.

SUBSCRIPTION PAYMENTS

31 October is the final date for payment of Subscriptions.
If you have not paid your subscription you are not eligible to play Interclub or in the Leagues & you will not receive the new gate code.
Make our job easier by paying now before we have to chase you.

JUNIORS

To all our new junior members - welcome - we hope you have a great time playing at the club. As I write this, those playing junior interclub have already had a couple of matches, though the weather has been a little fickle. Of course, we are going to get longer hotter days soon and we will be able to play more tennis during the evening. (I hope this is not just wishful thinking - Editor)
The juniors ladders (boys and girls) have been started from scratch using data from matches from the junior interclub trials. This enabled me to work out a reasonable girls ladder, but given the far greater number of boys at the trials this year, it was more difficult to be accurate for them. So, for the boys, I have filled the ladder based on the names and orders from the interclub teams - this can only be improved by challenging others on the ladder. Ladder Rules - full rules will be posted on the board. Briefly
1) you may challenge anyone on the ladder on your first challenge of the season - after that no more than 3 above you.
2) contact your selected opponent and choose a mutually acceptable time.
3) if you win, you take their place and move everyone down a place.
4) An interclub game can also be a ladder challenge but you must agree this before the match starts.
Please tell me all results, since I will update the club website with the ladder results. Remember you can get phone numbers for opponents from the junior member list on the website (you need the gate code for this for privacy reasons.)
Happy tennis. Chester Holmes - 938 1606 or email: chester@clear.net.nz

HV TOP CLUB CONTEST

4 Hutt Valley teams were supposed to contest for the right to call themselves the 'top club' but only Lower Hutt and Petone showed up and Petone couldn't field enough women and had to bring in some 'honorary' ones for the afternoon. In spite of the strong to gale force southerly, the afternoon of tennis was good fun for all those who took part.

BETTY JACKSON

In 1949 Betty Hutton married Myers Jackson. They went to Wairakei on their honeymoon & Betty caused a great buzz among the other guests when they discovered how well she played tennis.
Betty was born in Eltham, she went to school in Levin & shifted to Lower Hutt in 1928. She was talked into joining the Lower Hutt Tennis Club by Maurie Power & had to walk from Kiwi Street, Alicetown whenever she wanted to play tennis.
Her husband Myers lived at 14 Kauri Street & he became enamoured of Betty through watching her play tennis through the hedge.
In 1933 Betty won the Ladies handicap Singles. This event was played first to 40 points & Betty had a handicap of minus 24. She preferred playing on the hard courts & she remembers everyone cheering when she won because her handicap was so severe.
In the Ladies doubles that same year she partnered with Gladys Howe the wife of the milkman. They played against Hazel King & Marie Nunnelly. Marie lived in the only State house in Totara Crescent & it was her mother who donated the Nunnelly Casket to tennis. Betty broke a string & her opponents refused to allow her to change racquets with the result she lost that match.
The presentations of trophies were made at the usual end of year function held at Eva Drapers Studio, upstairs next to the King George Theatre in High Street.
The name of the milkman's horse was "Dolly" . Betty remembers the public furore when the milkman flogged the horse in the street for something it did wrong. This was a horse which used to always stop at the right house for the milkman to fill the billy with milk so perhaps it forgot to stop once??
Betty still drives her car & she is the only person I know who does not have a TV. Those little green boxes outside your house she refers to as "the septic tank for the effluent from TV".
I hope we get Betty back to tennis & I hope you will get an opportunity to meet a great old lady who remembers so much about the "good old days"

HV INTERCLUB

WOMEN'S DIVISION TEAMS
It is great that this season more players have shown an interest in playing Division tennis and been willing to give singles interclub a go. We have 3 teams - one in Div 1, captained by Amanda Crone and two in Div 2, one captained by Tui Snow and the other by Jessica Maguren.
The Div 1 team started off with a 4-2 win over Upper Hutt and Tui's Div 2 team had a loss to Petone, one of the stronger Div 2 teams.
Jessica's team were unlucky to get a draw in the first round of their grade but Jessica and Sarah Chin filled in very capably in Div 1.
Barbara

MENS DIVISION TEAMS
Men's Division 2 team (A) captained by Michael Briggs lost 2/4 to a very strong Petone team. He reports that the two Michael's had a close loss but a good game that could have gone either way, Steve Denholm played exceptionally well, actually Steve reported that he was playing someone who played the same game as himself and he found himself rather difficult to play, get my drift!!! while Nigel had a bad day, young Michael Pigou only 12 yrs old managed to get a set off an ex-regional player, so not bad for the 1st time playing with seniors in a senior competition.
Mens Division 2 team (B) captained by Clive Jepson lost to Stokes Valley on a count back. Fraser Wilkinson won both games and played brilliantly, well done Fraser. James Chin won his Singles, while unfortunately Robbie lost in a close 3 setter, so we were very unlucky.
Mens Division 4 Team
This is our team of juniors and John Nash is the captain. He reports they had a 5/1 win over Wainuiomata, great start guys, good to see you all out there practicing.

ETIQUETTE

Well the tennis season is well underway, and I must say it is nice to see the courts being used so much. I see more people coming down to practice and I think it is wonderful, if only the weather would warm up then it would just be perfect.
A few exciting things are happening for Atomic Tennis this season. The most exciting has to be the introduction of Chris - Sun Yu to the coaching team. Chris is a very good tennis player and coach, with international playing & coaching experience from China. He is learning quickly & is very enthusiastic about tennis and coaching. Chris is currently working with the junior players, however we are looking to get a few private lessons & some interclub teams in for training. So if you found that I was booked the last time you called then give me a call and maybe we can arrange a training session for you or your team with Chris.
Tiny Tennis has started again with 32 of the 4-6 year olds coming down to the club to play on Monday afternoons. It is great to see the little ones out on the courts running around, these guys are the future of the club and the game. The after school programmes are popular as well this term as the season starts kicking into full swing.
For the adult players I would like to start some beginner group lessons on Tuesday evenings from 7.00 - 8.00 p.m. over a four week period. So if you need a little improvement of your techniques, or if you know someone who would like to join the club but is not too sure about what to do on the court then give me a call. The lessons will start as soon as a group is to gether.
Club tennis is running on Friday nights and Sunday Mornings. I would like to remind everyone that we have two groups on a Friday night with the 5.00 pm group being for the younger more beginner / intermediates of the interclub players, & the 6.30 pm group being for the advanced & older interclub players. So please do come along.
Sunday mornings are going really well so far with the parents helping out and it is much faster and more entertaining for the players. Thanks to Elizabeth for organising the parents, and of course to all the parents for helping out!
Good luck to all of the interclub teams and players.

MIDWEEK MEMO

Midweek opened for summer on 3 September. Plenty of enthusiastic current members & several prospective ones enjoyed a fun tournament, spot prizes & morning tea. Campbell is still holding out as the sole midweek male. Where are all the rest of you?... We really would enjoy some more mixed doubles so come along & help us out.
Five teams are presently participating in a spring league. We've only been rained off once but I've heard plenty of people cursing the wind. Jackie's team is leading after 3 rounds with Eileen's close behind.
Summer interclub begins on 9 October. Lower Hutt has 5 teams entered - one fewer than 2001. Numbers have dropped overall in the Hutt Valley competition to 30 teams playing 5 grades with a promotion/relegation round before Christmas.
The teams are:-
Grade 1 (Team 1) Barbara Bridger, Barbara Allen, Christine Archer, Victoria Crone, Hazel Maurer
Grade 1 (Team 2) Judy Hicks, Lynne Pearce, Sandra Lissette, Ros Read, Sheryl Edgar
Grade 3 Paulina Godfrey, Tricia Lloyd, Jackie Clarke, Eileen Cullen, Jane McDougall
Grade 4 Jan Edwards, Jocelyn White, Elizabeth Josephson, Lee Manning, Debbie Nielsen
Grade 5 Elaine Barnett, Susi McClelland, Jo Biggs, Philippa Holdaway
Traditionally the Midweek Club has only operated on Tuesday mornings for many years. I'm gauging interest in another club morning - possibly Thursday. Let me know if you fancy this idea.
10 December will be Christmas lunch & our closing day - wet or fine.

The Regional teams selections have been rather challenging, or rather I got challenged, if you want to play in specific grades make sure you start your training early and let me know, so I can advise you of the people you need to challenge.
The session started well with two easy wins over the last 2 weeks for the Women's Regional 1 & 2 and Men's Regional 2. Both our men and women's Regional 3 team are still settling down with new players, but I am sure they will come out firing on all 4 cylinders soon.

WHO ARE YOU ?

Who does the dishes before they go home after tennis?
Who sweeps the floor and puts out the rubbish?
Who brings in the chairs? Who picks up the rubbish
around the courts? Are you a "Who"

LEAGUES

WEDNESDAY LEAGUE
The Wednesday night league is still very popular with 13 teams (could have had 15 if we had more lights) & goes until 18th December. There are a lot of new players in this league with everyone enjoying it. Also we have new club members who would like to play & their names and contact numbers are on the reserve list on the board, please give them a call if needing a reserve. The mini round between the Winter & Summer leagues was popular with lots of very close games. The weather so far has been good & we hope it continues.

MONDAY LEAGUE
I have been running this league for just over 12 months now & I am still having problems with people who continue to turn up late …. hummmm…….
I've had a increase in interest with this league and some regional players are wanting to play, so there has been a slight format change in that we will have an A & a B week, this means that some people will play each fortnight. If you want to play ensure I know early to avoid disappointment. If for some reason you think you have something else on, or you have a slight injury that you are hoping will heal before Monday night, cancel with me on Sunday, don't compromise other people or inconvenience the league, give me time to find a replacement.

CLUB CHAMPS 2002-03

Lists will shortly be put up at the Club House for the Senior Club Championships. These will be held to coincide with our 75th Jubilee celebrations on 8 - 9 February 2003. This is an interclub free weekend except for Regional players so we will also schedule games on NZ Day, Thursday, 6 February. You will need to be available all of these days.
We will be providing dinner & drinks on the Saturday after the tennis (free) & you can be certain the whole weekend will be celebrated with style.
A special Jubilee Handicap Doubles event will be played on the Saturday & will be open to all current & previous members.
All the racquet manufacturers have been invited to participate with demos and giveaways.
Please complete & return the Registration form if you will be attending.

SUN YU (Chris)

One of the most northern provinces of China is Liaoning. The capital of this province is Shenyang with a population of 5.5 million.
This is the city Sun Yu who like to be called Chris comes from.
Chris is 27 & he has been in New Zealand for nearly 2 years. He has been living in Upper Hutt learning English & has just recently joined our Club.
At University in China, Chris obtained a degree in sports administration & qualified as a tennis coach, but he is also very proficient at badminton, table tennis, soccer, volleyball, & basketball. Chris was the top tennis junior up to age 18 representing his Province of Liaoning & he eventually became the coach for the representative teams from that area. They have asked him to return to take up a coaching position again but he would like to remain in NZ .
Gene Ridgway has taken Chris onto his team of coaches & Chris will now be available for coaching all levels.
I arranged to have a hit with Chris a few weeks ago & enjoyed my experience.
I now have a new grip so look out!!!!!

75th JUBILEE

Included with this Newsletter is a flyer advertising our 75th celebrations next February. This will be held the same weekend as our Club Championships & will be an exciting event for the Club.
We will start the Club Champs on 6 February (NZ Day) so we will have more time on the 8/9 February to socialize.
A special handicap doubles event for past and present members will be held & we will provide food and drink all weekend.
This will be a fantastic opportunity to watch some great tennis, to play tennis or just to reminisce about games won or lost.
